Observatory

A menu bar app that tracks my AI limits, screen time and cost.

It shows how much is left of my Claude Code and Codex limits, where my screen time went, and an estimate of what the day cost. It runs on my own computer and doesn't change any of the tools it reads.

  1. Your limits, at a glance. Close on the Mac menu bar: a telescope icon with 47%, the lowest limit left.
  2. Observatory runs in your menu bar. Its menu lists each Claude Code and Codex limit with reset times, and today's screen time, tokens and API-equivalent cost.
  3. Am I near my limits? The dashboard's Limits tile: 47% left on the Claude Code 5-hour window, 78% weekly, Codex 64% and 88%.
  4. Where did my time go? Screen time today: 3h 53m, mostly editors (2h 20m) and the browser (1h 33m).
  5. What did it cost? Cost today: $60.70, an API-equivalent estimate, not a bill. Claude Code $43.78, Codex $16.92.
  6. One computer, or two. The view pulls back to the whole dashboard, with limit history below, and a second computer, Test PC, joins. Screen time: Studio Mac 3h 53m, Test PC 2h 30m, 6h 23m together. Cost: Studio Mac $60.70, Test PC $26.25, $86.95 together. Both sums are labeled not deduplicated. Limits are never added together.
  7. Local only. Open source. End card: git clone https://github.com/ScribleSean/observatory.git, then cd observatory and npm run setup.

01

Three questions

Observatory answers three questions: am I near my limits, where did my time go, and what did it cost? The menu bar panel lists every limit window, with the least left first.

The dashboard opens in my browser and breaks each answer down: limit windows with reset times and pace, screen time by app and category, and tokens priced at public API rates.

02

Monitor only

It doesn't start, stop or answer an agent, and it doesn't change the tools it reads. It sends nothing to any server and has no telemetry. Saved data holds totals, not prompts, messages or window titles.

It shows missing data as Unknown, not zero, and labels dollar figures as estimates, not bills.

03

One computer first

Setup is one command. It builds the dashboard and a small menu bar app on my own computer and starts them at login, with no account and no installer. A Mac and a Windows PC can share one view over SSH, and the dashboard labels combined sums as not deduplicated.
