cube·type

Solve a Rubik’s cube by typing words.

Every turn of the cube has a word: type rush and the right face turns, type recoil and it turns back. It plays in the browser and keeps stats like a typing test.

The cube·type game: a scrambled 3D cube in the middle, with a word beside each face, such as rover for R and relax for R prime

01

How it plays

The first letter of a word is its face, words about going forward turn clockwise, and words about going back turn counter-clockwise. Enter repeats the last turn, so a word then Enter is a double. Swiping or the arrow keys rotate the whole cube.

The bar at the top tracks each stage of a CFOP solve. Once the first two layers are done, the last-layer algorithm shows up as a line of words to type, like a Monkeytype test.

02

Three modes

Drill shows one move at a time and asks for its word. Sprint is one timed solve with splits. Zen is untimed, and new cubes keep coming.

Typing is never corrected. Wrong letters stay in red until I delete them, and a turn happens only when the word is exact.

03

Choosing the words

Each move has a pool of words, and a picker chooses which one shows. Like Monkeytype it is mostly random, but it leans toward short words that switch hands and avoid using the same finger twice in a row.

It also counts finesse, borrowed from Tetris: turns that cancel out, like R then R prime, are wasted, and the game flags them.
